Despite their determination never to fall in love again, Rebecca and Patrick can't deny the connection between them. But when danger lurks around every corner, she knows there's only one man she can trust to protect both her and her daughter. But who will protect her from a broken heart?

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000040_00001]Wedding planner Tyler Warren left heartbreak behind when she ran away from her small Southern hometown and started a new life in a big city. Years later, she wants to believe in the fairy-tale endings her job promotes, but the clients she meets day after day seem to be more “Crazily Ever After” than “Happily Ever After.”

Meanwhile, her own attempts at romance play out as bizarre comedies rather than love stories, and she’s starting to think Prince Charming either fell off his horse or got eaten by a dragon. When unresolved issues from Tyler’s past complicate things even further, she discovers she may yet have some things to figure out before she can find her own happy ending.

This delightful first book in the Tales Behind the Veils series chronicles Tyler’s wacky misadventures, both personal and professional. Whether she’s getting insane requests from brides or outlandish requests on dates, you’re sure to be charmed and entertained by the Diary of a Single Wedding Planner.

Review

I received a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest opinion.

Having been married I have worked with a wedding planner but not I guess you could say she was more of a wedding organizer.  She was a lady in our church who's job it was to help with the ceremony.  That pretty much it.  So my experience was a far cry from the type of life Tyler leads in this story.

At times, I would have liked to shake Tyler and show her what was right in front of her.  Sometimes we just can't see the forest for the trees.  But it's easy to get lost in the day to day of our lives; keep going and doing what we've always gone and done.

Tyler is a wounded soul.  She has been hurt by someone she believed would be her partner for life.  Then he's up and gone with someone else.  Betrayal at its worst.  What would you do?  Would you be able to pick up and find the life you want, deserve after that?  I don't know that I'd be brave enough.

In the end Tyler is able to get away from her past and leave it where it belongs.  After she does that she can see what she has now and appreciate it.  Are you holding on to something painful in your past?  I catch myself sometimes mired in memories; the should haves or could haves.  I would certainly recommend this book to everyone.  I definitely enjoyed going on life's roller coaster with Tyler!

RR4front

Mary's never been completely honest with anyone--especially herself.
The man she's supposed to marry reminds her of her father in ways she's suppressed for years--controlling, abusive, and manipulative. The sisters she's finally found don't understand her shame or confusion.
When Ian enters the picture with his British accent and Montana tan, Mary starts to question the past and her loyalty to a father who took away all her chances at true happiness.
Can Mary help her sisters break free from their father’s diabolical past? Or will his sins corrupt any chance at true happiness with Ian? And herself?

Review:

I received a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest opinion.

As with the first three I enjoyed Regretting Redemption just as much.  The main character in this one is Mary, the fourth sister.  She is completely infuriating!  I mean that in a good way.  Her demeanor and personality are so well written I just want to shake her.  I want her to see what she's worth and accept herself.

I can only imagine finding out that my perception of someone, like a parent, is almost completely opposite of how everyone else sees him.  Poor Mary has been hoodwinked.  But the saving grace is that she gets the good side of her dad.

Having to come to terms with how you see yourself, your view of a loved one, and reconciling that with the truth is a terrible struggle.  I wondered throughout the story if Mary would find peace.  Having sisters is a wonderful foundation for Mary.  With them and Ian she is able to find a new path.

Pondering Life

Life has been, well, life.  Current events have been weighing heavily on my mind and heart.  And you know what?  I'm scared.  I'm scared because I'm human.  I don't know what is coming next.  And I can't control everything.

As I was sitting on my back deck this evening watching the lightning bugs and listening to the katydids, I had a thought, more like a revelation.  We have new neighbors.  We've been blessed with a wonderful young lady of 88 years as a new friend.  She absolutely loves my boys.  Well, I got to considering what she's seen come and go through her life.  Think about it for a minute...  She's 88, almost 89.  I'm just 36, almost 37.  Pretty significant age difference.  She's the same age as my grandparents.  So they've all lived through the same world events.

Our neighbor was born just before the Great Depression.  As a child she and my grandparents were babies during that difficult time period.  Then World War II started.  My granddad went straight into the Army out of high school.  He had to, all high school boys did by then.  Thankfully the war ended before he really finished Basic.

Let's see, they lived through the Cold War, the Korean War, and the debacle that was Vietnam.  Can you even imagine the Cuban Missile Crisis and what that would look like now?!?  These wonderful people saw the rise of men like JFK, Martin Luther King Jr, and many more.  They also saw things that were truly terrible.

Their generation is often called The Greatest Generation.  They're the go-getters, the do-it-yourselfers, and they got things done.  They provided for their families as best they could.  If they had problems at work, with a neighbor, or whoever, they would TALK with the person.  No fighting, no ridiculous behavior.

These people who we're still fortunate to have with us, can still teach us if we'll just let them.  I know what came to mind for me was a few cliches like "This too shall pass."  and "Don't sweat the small stuff." or "Don't sweat the petty stuff and don't pet the sweaty stuff."  haha  But, the main theme being reinforced through all this is that time really does carry on with or without us.  Life will keep going and changing.  All this garbage going on in our country will fade into memory at some point.  My fervent hope and prayer is that it won't take another Civil War or World War III to sort us out.

Take the time and effort to look into what politicians are really about.  Does the one you're backing really have yours and the people's interests at heart?  Are the events of the past year really as bad as the media is telling us?  Is the media just creating more ratings or are they really reporting the facts?  Even though our sphere of influence may be small, we are not insignificant.  Increase your knowledge, help lead those around you, and ripples will grow.  Then maybe we can look back when we're 88, God willing, and see what we've lived through.  See that we held onto our beliefs and ideals and we're okay.

Take This Journey of Broken Souls Restored
and Tentative Hearts Brought Fully to Life

When family tragedy derails Henry Phillips's college studies, he's left unmoored and feeling abandoned. The only things that can tamp down his grief are the family farm, his fiddle, and an unexpected friendship with sweet but unusual preteen Mayfair Hoffman.

Unfortunately, Mayfair's older sister, Margaret, despite her spray of freckles and cute, turned-up nose, has a completely different effect. His grandmother's helper, she's always around, ready to push his buttons, and it seems at first that she doesn't care about his troubles.

Henry soon realizes, though, that Margaret's facing her own struggles. Mayfair's health and unique gift sit at the heart of those worries. Henry and Margaret soon find themselves relying on each other as potential tragedy collides with growing hope in a warm story of family bonds and the surprising ways healing finds us all.

Review

I received a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest opinion.

This is the second book in the series.  I believe it does stand well on its own.  Having read the prequel novella(which is free right now) and the first book, I had more background information on the characters.

I cannot imagine what I would do with the sudden unexpected loss of one of my parents.  That is what faces Henry when he comes home from college for the Christmas holidays.  Compound that with living in small-town USA where everyone knows everyone, well, there's not much that goes on that they don't already know.

While reading through Henry's actions, reactions, and emotions, we're right in the middle of his heartbreak.  There were a few times I just wanted to reach into the pages and pop him one for doing something stupid.  But thankfully he was raised right, has spectacular support from family and friends, and has a good head on his shoulders.

I loved the character of Margaret.  I can really sympathize with the big frizzy hair and freckles.  Welcome to my world.  Though I have not been ridiculed by my mother for looking the way I do.  Margaret is perfectly written to be Henry's match.  And I love the back and forth between the two of them.  They are good sparing partners and so naturally go together.  And Henry is just that much more lovable for his caring for Mayfair.

I would certainly recommend this book to anyone.  This series would be perfect for summer reading.  It takes you through the trials and struggles of 3 generations of families in the hills of West Virginia.  If you don't have a family who supports, loves, and cares for you unconditionally, I hope and pray you find your own family like Margaret and Mayfair.  There was one line in particular that stuck out to me.  The preacher Ray was riding with Henry and were talking about Esau's story.  The preacher was talking and said, "God works in His own way, and it's almost never the way I expect."  I've heard many say the same thing through the years.  God's timing is always perfect.

“Would you shut up, Justin?” Ashley whacks his arm with the back of her hand.

We’re sitting in our favorite café after working a luncheon. We spend more time together here than any other place. It’s simple, nothing fancy, has pretty decent food, and open late, which is perfect for our work schedules. We’re not on a first-name basis with the staff, but they recognize us.

“It’s fine.” I let out a sigh. “We can talk about it. I’m good.” I swirl a french fry in some ketchup and shove it in my mouth.

I look up to see Ashley giving me a look that says she doesn’t believe I’m fine. I honestly am. I didn’t even nibble on my bottom lip when I said it, so it has to be true.

“No, but seriously, Ash, you should have seen that place. It was like something out of a magazine,” Justin continues, obviously not caring whether it bothers me or not.

The Dubois family condo was featured in New York Spaces a while back, but I’m not going to tell them that.

“I’ve gotta find myself a rich girl.” Justin leans his head back against the booth.

“Oh geez,” Ashley says, rolling her eyes at him. “And why would a rich girl want you?”

“Hey, I’ve got a lot to offer.” He holds up a skinny arm, flexing it to show off his muscles, which, in-fact, are quite toned, but definitely lacking in girth.

Ashley and I look at each other and then burst out laughing.

“Whatever, you guys. You’ll see; I’ll show you.”

“Yes, you just showed us, and we were not so impressed.” Ashley smirks at him.

“Well, maybe I have more going on than meets the eye.” He smirks back and adds a wink.

“Ew.” Ashley scrunches her face, looking repulsed.

Could you imagine for a moment growing up your whole life thinking, believing that you had lost most of your family?  What a hole that would leave in your heart?  But then after losing what is left of your family, you find out there's more than meets the eye...

The author does a spectacular job of taking us through the emotions of the main character Kelli after she goes through all of that.  She loses her dad then, heap on top of that, finding out he'd been deceiving her her whole life.  I believe I would probably just completely fall apart.  Kelli's character is a strong one.  She has great friends to help see her through.

I'm a big fan of these type of stories.  I thoroughly enjoyed reading this tale of heart-break, adventure, acceptance, love, and self-realization.  Kelli is a wonderful character and her story is full of ups and downs.  I would definitely recommend this book to anyone.

Prepped, mixing, measuring, and scooping

Enjoying the fruits of our labors, or rather the cookies of our labors.

My boys and I had so much fun making cookies together.  The story is very cute and sweet.  I can remember making cookies and things with my grandmother as I was growing up.  Those are great memories.

The main character, Mimi, wants to make cookies with her grandmother.  So Nonni helps Mimi get all the ingredients out and they make them together.  They have great fun together.  And that's what stuck out most to me.  The fun they have.

The story is short and easy to follow with your own little baker.  They will enjoy listening to the story and the illustrations are just right.  And the most fun part, the author adds in the recipe at the end of the book!  We followed the recipe, mostly.  I had milk chocolate chips on hand.  I told them we could add nuts or crazins.  They decided our cookies would be extra chocolately.  So along with the chips we smashed some semi-sweet baking chocolate and white baking chocolate.  With that much chocolate, we didn't use as much sugar.

The cookies turned out really well.  They were quite yummy and all of us loved them!  If you're looking for a way to get your kid(s) involved in the kitchen, this book is a great way to start.  Have fun and get baking!

In her eyes baking should be a fun experience adults and children can share together. What better way to do that then with an interactive story that makes learning your way around the kitchen exciting and easy!

When she is not making specialty cakes and pastries for her business AllyCakesNYC, you can find her in Central Park with her lively Jack Russell Terrier, Rudy and the love of her life, Jonathan.

Reviewed by www.mikishope.com This is a perfect 1st cookbook for children to start learning the art of baking. There is only one recipe but it comes with a storyline. Mimi wants to bake cookies and Grandma is going to teach her the correct way!! What fun--you have to be real careful with the measurements and ingredients and you also have to know when to let a grown up take over! This little book has it all covered. Actually I might even be able to bake cookies after having read this!! This is only one in a series of books with recipes-one to a book that this chef author has written. I suggest you read about the author below-it is intriguing. Then go and pre order this book for your little chef/baker!

Reviewed by Kirstin Pulioff at www.kirstinpulioff.com My Review - 5 Stars Since my daughter wants to be a chef when she grows up, I have read several cooking books and cookbooks with her, but nothing comparable to Mimi's Adventure in Baking Chocolate Cookies. What a fabulous book! Not only does this book describe the technique and recipe for baking cookies, but it also focuses on a story. There are many ways to read this story. You can simple read it as a wonderful book. You can focus on the bright illustrations. The ingredients and steps make for the perfect math focus... and it also reads as an activity book that you can read while you bake. In every way, this book earns my 5 star review... And now, I'm going to bake some cookies.
