Chapter 9
I heard that chuckle. Just cut it out.
“Carry on … carry on.”
There is still no sign of Dad, so I settle into my beloved window seat and
pick up my saga of Scrooge. When I read Mrs. Cratchit’s comments about
Scrooge being a lonely, unhappy man, I can’t help but think of my own
mother’s description of Doctor Roth. This is not the first time this
thought has crossed my mind. Doctor Roth is, after all, a force to be
reckoned with. A bachelor quite set in his ways, seemingly always
irritated. Coincidence? I think not. I ponder this similarity and then
go to find my mother. She is folding clothes in their bedroom, and I
jump up on the bed with reckless disregard to the neatly folded piles.
Though my mother usually has the patience of ten saints, she does not find my behavior amusing. I am made to refold each item that I’d disturbed. And
while I hated doing it, it gave me the chance to ask her something of my
perceived comparison between Scrooge and Doctor Roth. I explain to her
that I see many things in our own Doc that I see in Scrooge. And I ask
my mother if we can invite Doctor Roth for Christmas dinner. From the
surprised expression on her face, I might as well have asked her to grow
wings and fly around the room.
As I look now at this scene, I see my mother’s shock-not at the request
itself, but at the depth of compassion her oldest child was expressing.
Never would she have expected such a suggestion from me. She knew I
found the doctor terrifying in his gruffness. Nevertheless, here I was
asking that he be invited for Christmas supper. Mom sits down next to me
on the bed, and holds both of my hands in hers. I see her heart light
get brighter. Mom recognizes, again, that she has done a good job, that
my core values are strong and thriving.
